Assam Govt has launched an eviction drive at Silsako Beel (lake), a protected wetland of Assam

NEDP Staff Report: Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) of Asam government has launched an eviction drive at Silsako Beel (lake), a protected wetland of Assam.

The eviction began on 28th February, Monday, with over 15 excavators and 3,000 armed personnel securing the operation.

Silsako beel is a wetland and lake located at the heart of the Guwahati city and surrounded by villages like Satgaon, Hengrabari and Mathgharia in Kamrup Metropolitan district of Assam.

This lake serves as a reservoir basin for the storm water run-off from the city of Guwahati.

GMDA chairman Narayan Deka said that they will commence a three-day operation. In their 1st phase will be continued for 2 days displacing 250 families. According to Deka, around 1,200 bighas of the total 1,800 bighas of land are under encroachment.

During drive on Monday several temples, naamghars and mosques were also demolished, Deka added.
