Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi passionately championed the cause of women’s empowerment in Indian politics during her address at the Lok Sabha. She asserted that the passage of the women reservation bill would be a realization of the dream cherished by her late husband, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi envisioned greater participation of women in India’s political landscape, and Sonia Gandhi believes that this bill is a crucial step towards that goal.

Sonia Gandhi recalled the history of the women reservation bill, highlighting Rajiv Gandhi’s initial attempt and its eventual passage under the leadership of PM PV Narasimha Rao. She emphasized that while substantial progress has been made with over 15 lakh elected women leaders across the country through local bodies, Rajiv Gandhi’s dream remains only partially fulfilled.

Sonia Gandhi urged the immediate implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam 2023 Bill, stressing that any delay would be a disservice to women in the country. She also called for a caste census and provisions for the reservation of SC, ST, and OBC women. The discussion on this vital bill began in the Lok Sabha, and its passage holds the promise of a more inclusive and representative Indian political landscape.
